Lego Minotaurus Game – What Does It Do?

Unlike normal Lego sets, this is a board game, and not a construction kit. Having said that some construction is required before it can be played, adding to the value for money you are getting from this toy. The aim of this new range of Lego board games is for players to ‘build, play and change’. You build the game with the normal construction pieces, you play the game and then you pull it all apart and do it all again. The ‘do it all again’ part is not as repetitive as it sounds as you get to change the layout of the pieces on the ‘board’ creating a new game each time.

The idea of this game is to find your way (you are a brave knight!) through a maze to get to a hidden temple. You have to try and make sure you don’t cross paths with the Minotaur, a mythical creature protecting the temple, or with the other knights hoping to get there first. There is some strategy involved as you get to block other players paths by cleverly putting walls or hedges in their way. Unlike other games, it is not just a race to the finish largely determined by your luck on rolling the dice.

Each player has three micro pieces of the same colour. They are very small, each fitting on one stud piece.

  • If you roll a number you move your player(s) that number of spaces.
  • If you roll a black tile you move the Minotaur 8 spaces (but feel free to change the rules – that is part of the game). Determine your strategy to ensure your placement is at the detriment of other players.
  • If you roll a grey tile you move a wall and if you roll the green tile you move a hedge, again moving everything with an aim of blocking your opponents.
  • If you meet the Minotaur on your way, you have to go back to the start – boo hoo.

The winner is the first person to get his men to the centre corner plate of his colour. You could play with just one man if you wanted a quicker game.

There are 211 pieces of bold, striking colours and 12 fairly detailed micro LEGO figures. The set comes with a template that you lay on the board so you can quickly and easily set up the maze.

Also included are a rule book and instruction booklet.

The game is for ages 6+ years.

Lego Minotaurus Game – Is It Any Good?

There are various great features of the game that allow its’ scope to be extended:

  • The dice has interchangeable pieces, meaning that you can mix the rules up. Perhaps you will decide to only move walls and not hedges or vice versa. This means that no two games will ever be the same.
  • The board is a standard Lego board meaning you can borrow pieces from your other building sets to create more interesting mazes.
  • There are no rules as to the design of the maze so it can be rebuilt to your own design or enlarged if you have pieces of your own.

The instructions are clear and simple, the assembly is quick and easy and younger players shouldn’t get bored as the game play only lasts about 20 minutes. For older players the accompanying booklet makes good suggestions to make the game more difficult.

The dice has rubbed edges which causes unpredictable bouncing. This is useful if, like me, you have children with less than honest dice rolling scruples.

The box is big enough to house the board when fully built – a useful feature for quick tidying up.

The strategic moving of walls and hedges make the gameplay fun and competitive.

Older players will probably find it too easy to play with the standard rules, but Lego make good suggestions to ramp up the difficulty and make the game last longer.

Overall this is a very good family game – simple enough for children to understand, entertaining enough for adults to enjoy. But if you get fed up with it, either invent your own version or simply build something else with the pieces.
