The Ben 10 Ultimate Alien toys have been in shops over in the US for a while (US visitors please click here), but at last we are seeing some in the UK now too. With this third installment of the popular Ben 10 series having aired on Cartoon Network on 10/10/10 (nice date!), you should be expecting your Ben 10 fan’s Christmas list to include a few of these new goodies.

Here is some idea of what you can expect to find in this new range.

As with all of the Ben 10 toys range, the new toys will centre around the new Omnitrix watch called the Ultimatrix and the 10cm alien character figures.

Ben 10 Ultimate Alien Ultimatrix & New Omnitrix

There are a few versions of the new watch – the Vuescope Ultimatrix and the Disc Alien Ultimatrix – one of which is likely to be the next Ben 10 toy that your children will have to have. There is also a Legacy Omnitrix for slightly older children and an Omnitrix Bi-Optixx with lenticular disks for younger children.

Don’t get confused between these two new Ben 10 Ultimatrix though as per usual one is better than the other. They are both aiming to look more like the Omnitrix from the cartoon show by offering the ability for alien characters to be shown above the watch face. This is central to the cartoon’s story line where Ben sees his alien alter egos projected from the watch before transforming into them.

Vuescope Ultimatrix

The Vuescope is the poor relation here as it achieves this via two viewing cones which stand on top of the Ultimatrix. Each cone has six images of different aliens. Insert the Vuescope viewing core into the Ultimatrix and twist, to project light out of the core to reveal one of the six aliens.

Disc Alien Ultimatrix

The Disc Alien Ultimatrix is much more realistic as the Disc Aliens are popped into the toy but they then pop up once activated to reveal a 3D version of the chosen alien. This watch also has realistic voices and character sounds from the show. It is also a two-in-one toy as you get a 10cm figure with it. You can get more of the Disc Aliens by buying more of the Ultimate Alien 10cm figures.

Legacy Omnitrix

The Legacy Omnitrix is not just a role play watch, it is the ultimate Omnitrix set for any Ben 10 fan. With this pack of 35 interchangeable pieces you get to build your own version of the Omnitrix. There is even a lightcore. You design it, you build it and then you can take it all apart and build another of the 1000 possible combinations.

Ben 10 Ultimate Alien Figures

10 cm Action Figures

In the 10cm articulated figures range, there are new alien characters to collect in the largest selection ever, such as Armodrillo, Rath and Lodestar but you can also get some old favorites in a new ‘Ultimate’ version such as Ultimate Humungousaur and Ultimate Swampfire. Each new figure comes with a Disc Alien that can be used with the Ultimatrix. The ultimate versions of old aliens have been brought out to match those from the new show where the new Omnitrix gives existing characters extra strength and more powerful abilities. The toys are bulkier than their predecessors.

Alter Alien Figures

These are odd looking figures. They are effectively a block head which can transform into a new character when you flip down the sides of the head. They come in packs of two and there are 12 packs to collect.

15cm DNA Alien Heroes

The slightly larger articulated figures are again represented in the new Ultimate Alien toy line. They each have two unique features such as arms that shoot missiles or water and retractable hoods.

Alien Creation Chamber Figures

The popular creation chamber figures are again represented in the Ultimate Alien line of toys. These 7.5cm mini figures come in packs of two with heads, arms, legs and bodies that can be taken apart and reassembled as different alien creations. There is also an Alien Creation Transporter where these different creations can take place (although they can also be made manually) as well as where the toys can be carried about or stored.

Ben 10 Ultimate Alien Vehicles

Mark 10 Deluxe Vehicle

This super Ben 10 vehicle is actually four vehicles in one – a racer, hovercraft, submarine and fighter jet – and also comes with a 10cm figure. It has lights, sounds and missiles.

Alien Creation Battle Launchers

This small three-in-one set comes with a Creation Chamber figure as well as a vehicle and a launcher. The packaging also doubles up as a ramp and there are six figures and launchers to collect.

There are quite a few new additions to the 10cm range including new characters such as Grandpa Max and Albedo as well a whole new line of Defender aliens.

Grandpa Max – comes with a collector’s card.

Gwen Tennyson – comes with a collector’s card and if you hold her up to the light, her eyes will glow.

Glow In The Dark Ben – this new version of the 15 year old Ben sees him sporting a cool jacket and playing on a skateboard, both of which glow in the dark, and comes with the usual collector’s card.

Soccer Ben – this is an alternative sporty version of Ben with him in his favourite football kit and comes with a football accessory and collector’s card.

Albedo – this new character comes with a skateboard and collectors card. Albedo is not human, but rather a Galvan. He used an Omnitrix to impersonate Ben in one of the Alien Force episodes and ended up being stuck in that form but with silver hair, red eyes and a red jacket.

Forever Knight – this enemy of Ben’s comes with a weapon and a collector’s card. It adds a villain to the collection to help your children with realistic role play.

The Defender range of 10cm aliens offer a new look on their standard counterparts. They all come with the mini figure that unlocks sounds on the Ben 10 Omnitrix from the Alien Force range and a collector’s card.

Finally after much anticipation, the new range of six Ben 10 Lego sets are available. Chromastone, Swampfire, Big Chill, Jetray, Spidermonkey and Humungousaur can all be made from Lego sets of between 14 and 24 bricks. Some pieces are glow in the dark and you can combine the sets to create a super alien if you own all six.

The aim of the game is to capture three of your opponent’s gate cards. To capture the cards you must win the battle. The battle starts when two Bakugans pop open on the same gate card. Who wins is determined by adding together ‘G power’ points from the Bakugan toy and the gate card.

The show only started in 2007 but has since grown hugely in popularity to the point where there are now over 100 of these transforming spheres to buy and collect. Our thoughts

There are many different Bakugan to choose from in a range of colours and creatures. They can be bought individually when you know which specific one you want or in various packs where the marble is chosen at random, such as the Starter Pack which includes three Bakugan or a Booster Pack which contains one. The Battle Pack is ideal as it contains six of everything you need for a good price. The Bakugan marbles themselves are durable when being thrown across the battle cards and are fun to collect and trade. Children will have hours of fun with the challenge of rolling them correctly to earn points and watching them suddenly transform into warrior mode. The game combines the skill of rolling your Bakugan with the strategy of placing the cards effectively but even without the game, these toys are fun as they can be played with just like normal action figures. The marbles are small enough for your child to carry around or out and about and cheap enough individually to buy extras from pocket money. They are also good to help with maths as you have to work out whether yours or your opponent’s Bakugan is stronger and how much more power is needed to win. The only downside of this pack is that you do not know which Bakugan you are getting as the allocations to each box are random.

#2 Bakugan Battle Arena

• Battle ground for 4 players to play Bakugan
• Large surface area with rubber walls to stop Bakugan rolling away
• Quick and easy to set up

The Bakugan Battle Arena provides the ultimate battleground for playing against three opponents. There is a large surface area where the metallic game cards are placed and little rubber walls around the edge to stop the Bakugan escaping once they have been rolled into play. The arena folds out and the bumpers snap into place on each side. The open corners are where the Bakugan are launched into the arena. This Bakugan accessory enhances game play but does not come with any marbles or cards which need to be bought separately first.

Our thoughts

The Battle Arena is easy to set up and this can be done in less than a minute. You only need to unfold the plastic arena and erect the walls using the side slots. The walls are very useful as they stop the Bakugan from rolling off and the included instructions lay down the rules for game play if you are new to this craze. The arena is not that sturdy but does provide a good battle field for your children to make more of the marbles. It also keeps them from rolling the Bakugan all over your floors. Bakugan is the sort of game that you can just whip out and play anywhere so the arena may seem superfluous, but it does add to the ambiance of the game play.

#3 Bakugan Deka

• Super size Bakugan
• 10cm warriors but still lightweight
• Rare so a good buy for any Bakugan collection

The Dekas are the big boys of the Bakugan world and as such are more fun to play with. They are no longer pocket sized like the original versions but are still great to battle, collect and trade. They do everything the smaller ones do and once opened the figures are about 10cm tall but still lightweight.

Our thoughts

All children seem to love these supersized Bakugans. They are rarer so the children with them will have others looking over their shoulders. No instructions come with the Bakugan Deka so children that are new to Bakugan will need either the Starter Pack or Battle Pack so get them started. These large spheres are solidly built and more durable than their smaller counterparts. Also being bigger they are less likely to get lost. When playing the game with them though they are a bit more awkward to roll and getting them to land on the metallic cards is challenging!

#4 Bakugan New Vestroia 7-in-1 Maxus Dragonoid

• Big and powerful new Bakugan toys
• 7 pieces combine to form a giant dragon robot
• Individual pieces can also be used to play the standard Bakugan game

The recently launched Maxus Dragonoid is one of the biggest and most powerful Bakugan toys yet and is featured in the new ‘New Vestroia’ cartoon sequel. It is made up of one Bakugan warrior and six trap pieces that are used to protect the Bakugan. Traps are not round and do not roll but do open on the metal cards. They are used to increase points scored during the game. The pieces in this set are unique and cannot be bought elsewhere and once transformed can be assembled into a giant dragon robot. When not in monster mode, the seven Bakugan can be played with as normal in the strategy game although they only come with one ability card and one metal gate card. The ability card is special so will offer extra help when coming up with a strategy to beat your opponent.

Our thoughts

To play the normal Bakugan game you will need more marbles and cards than are included in this set. As such it is not a beginners set but a great addition to an existing collection. The traps are useful to play with along with other figures in your collection. The price point is a bit on the high side but is worth it for a special gift. Supposedly there are more single Bakugans coming out shortly that will also connect to the beast which will enhance its playability. The box includes the seven figures separately so you need to follow the graphical instructions to assemble the Dragonoid. The process is quite complex and can take around 20 minutes. Once assembled the toy is interesting and unique although a bit unsteady on its feet if you do not stand it correctly and not as big as it looks in the picture. It is also quite delicate so not recommended for young or heavy handed children.

#5 Bakugan Official Handbook

• 112 pages of Bakugan fun
• Includes tips on how to play the game
• For children aged 9-12 years old

Any children that are into Bakugan have to get this 112 page paperback handbook. It is the ultimate read for any fan. Inside they will find everything they need and want to know about this hot game. It’s a guide to the best brawlers, the fiercest Bakugan, and the biggest brawls. It also includes tips on how to play the game. The reading age of this book is 9-12 years old.

Ben 10: Alien Force is the sequel to the original show. The trusty Omnitrix has evolved, resulting in new aliens to transform into. The toy range has been updated accordingly with a new Ultimate Omnitrix and new alien action figures.

2. For what age group are Ben 10 Toys suitable?

The range is primarily aimed at boys aged 4 to 12.

3. Are Ben 10 Toys any good?

Ben 10 toys are exciting, good value toys that entertain and inspire creativity. They are realistic to the cartoon, well detailed and well made. In this time of financial crisis it is all about trusted brands and the makers of the Ben 10 range, Bandai, are the world’s third largest producer of toys. If you are looking for high quality, durable, multi-purpose toys that can be played with in different ways – Ben 10 delivers.

You can get some good action figures starting from about £5.

5. Which is the best Ben 10 Toy?

The must have toys for any Ben 10 fan are an Omnitrix and some action figures.

The Omnitrix comes in many different versions so beware of the cheaper forms that are less playable. The two best Omnitrix watches are the Deluxe Omnitrix and the new Alien Force Ultimate Omnitrix. They are realistic to the cartoon series and are ideal for superhero role play.

The best value for money in action figures are the 10cm versions as they are poseable, well detailed and hard wearing but also cheap enough to buy a few.  Ensure you are buying the ‘right’ alien though as your Ben 10 fan will undoubtedly have their favourites. Take advantage of multi figure packs to get your Ben 10 fan’s collection started. The Creation Chamber figures also offer great creative play allowing children to mix things up and make new Ben 10 aliens.

If you don’t mind shoot-em up games, the Ben 10 video games are great. They are fairly easy to play, challenging but not too much so. There’s great sound and story line and you have to solve problems. The best bits for young Ben 10 fans are:

• another player can join or leave and help at any point in the game; and
• you start from where you run out of life so you don’t have to go back to the beginning of a level.

6. Which is the worst Ben 10 Toy?

The playsets are typically expensive, cumbersome and have too many parts that get lost. Generally they also require you to buy the rest of the product range to use with it, so are often not worth the money. The adverts and the packaging are always very tempting but once the box is opened and the first play frenzy is over, disappointment sets in.

The cheapest versions of the Omnitrix (the Omnitrix FX and the Alien Viewer) have limited appeal. Check out our blog post Ben 10 Omnitrix Watches – The Differences Every Parent Needs To Know for more detailed information.

With the action figures you need to avoid the smallest and the largest.  The Transforming Alien Rocks or figures from Planetary Powder sets are tiny, mono-coloured and badly detailed. At the other end of the scale, the 30cm Epic Alien Figures are not poseable and made of inferior quality plastic.

7. What toys and merchandise does the Ben 10 Toy range include?

So here’s a little post I’ve put together to answer these questions.

What is the Ben 10 Ultimate Omnitrix watch?

The new Ben 10 Ultimate Omnitrix matches the one worn by the now 15 year old Ben in the new Ben 10 Alien Force cartoon series. It features lights and cool sound effects on its own but you can attach a mini translucent alien figure to the top of the watch to activate the alien’s voice. The mini transparent Swampfire alien figure comes with the Omnitrix but you can buy other aliens as part of the 2-in-1 toy bundles that are the 10cm Alien Collection Figures (sold separately).

To attach the mini figure to the face of the watch:

• Hold the figure so that it faces the on-off switch (the little, black, left to right slider you can see on the side of the watch).

• Position it directly above the top of the watch face.

• Align the plastic holders on the base of the figure (you can see them in the photo above) with the holes around the watch face (the outermost black circle in the photo below).

• When the figure is in the exact position, click into place.

To remove the mini figure:

• Grab the feet of the alien.

• Tilt the figure towards the on-off switch until it snaps away.

In June 2009 there was exciting news for Ben 10 and Lego fans as Cartoon Network Enterprises and The Lego Group made a deal to bring to market a Ben 10 toys range of Lego. Exact details were sketchy but the range was said to feature new elements with a ‘twist’. We now know these to be the glow in the dark bricks. Early reviews of these sets are positive as they are simple to construct and children love the ability to change the parts with other Ben 10 lego toys to create their own alien.

Lego, the construction toy is still as popular as ever. You know as a parent that you are getting a quality toy that is durable. Lego toys foster creativity and encourage the development of motor skills, role-playing and problem-solving abilities. Children enjoy creating an output – they get a sense of achievement from following the instructions and getting the toy built. Once built they can play with their toy by creating their own imaginary world, perfectly suited to the Ben 10 theme.

The partnering of the huge selling Ben 10 brand with the globally recognised Lego, must mean sure fire success for the popularity of this new Ben10 Lego toy.

That night you have a few minutes to go online and order the agreed on present but there are at least four different versions. Aagh, which one should you choose? Presumably your Ben 10 fan had one in mind but you want to get the best, most appropriate one right? So here are your choices …

… or BUY NOW if you know which one you want!

Omnitrix F/X

The Ben 10 Omnitrix FX provides a good role play experience with its flashing red and green lights and transformation sound effects taken directly from the TV series. Turn the dial to choose between the 10 aliens and see them in silhouette on the face of the Omnitrix which is backlit for an easier view.

The Omnitrix F/X is a great stimulus for the imagination. It is well made and withstands the usual dropping and wall bashing dished out by children. Although seemingly pricey for a plastic strap, turning dial and red and green lights, the daily use it is likely to get means you will see value for your money. The sounds are authentic and children seem excited about hitting the dial before they “transform”. It is perhaps more suitable for Ben 10 mad children under 5 years old as there is no gaming for them to contend with. In fact it does little more than make noises, flash lights and display alien pictures on the dial so you would expect it to be a lot less expensive than the deluxe version but you will be sadly disappointed. Comfort wise the F/X is also lacking with it’s plastic strap which can be difficult for young ones to strap on and can be a little big for the smaller wrist.

Omnitrix Alien Viewer

The Omnitrix Alien Viewer allows you to view cool scenes from the TV series and watch Ben transform into different aliens by inserting one of the various disks available – three of which are included. Other disks are available with the 10cm Ben 10 Collectible Action Figures (sold separately). Each disk features 8 animation cells showing Ben’s transformation into an alien. The viewing aperture is 1cm in diameter. It is true to scale for realistic role play.

The Omnitrix Alien Viewer could be a nice little addition to your child’s Ben 10 toy collection. If he collects the 10cm Ben 10 Collectible Action Figures he will soon have a great collection of the disks that are included with these toys enabling him to watch Ben in more and more guises. But beware it is not just a smaller version of the other Omnitrix. It has no lights or sound and so to an excited child it seems to do nothing at all other than look like an Omnitrix when worn, although this alone does encourage imagination. Viewing the aliens is also not ideal as there is no back light. You need to point the viewer at a strong light source and get the angle just right to see anything and then the images are tiny. Changing the disks can be fiddly and the disk storage is limited. Knowing young boys keeping track of these small parts is not going to be their top priority. If the disks are lost the Omnitrix becomes pointless.

Conclusion

There is stiff competition between the more up to date Alien Force Ultimate Omnitrix and the more gaming style Deluxe Omnitrix. Which you choose will probably be determined by the age of your Ben 10 fan.
