“It’s Danny’s birthday soon Mum.”
“Oh, OK, what shall we get him?”
“He likes motorcycle toys”
“He does, oh dear ….” and this is how this blog post started.

I’m used to “He likes Ben 10 toys” or “He likes Transformers toys“, but motorbikes – well that threw me.

So after a few hours of research, here are my findings on what on earth you can buy if you need a motorbike toy.

DIECAST MOTORBIKE MODELS – from £3.00

There are a great many of these to choose from, such as a Ducati 1098s, a Suzuki RM-Z250 to name just two, and most are of a 1/18 scale. They are made of diecast metal with plastic parts and are very real looking with great attention spent on detailing. Many are mounted on stands and presented in a display box. For ages 8+.

CONSTRUCTION MOTORBIKES

Woodcraft Construction Kit – £3.99

This is for those children excited by “build-it” kids. It comes with sheets of strong plywood pre-cut into the pieces needed to build the motorbike. The pieces can be pressed out and are numbered so you can assemble them in order. They slot together easily, with instructions, to build a 3D model. This is more of an educational activity toy. For ages 9+.

Meccano Motorbikes – from £14.99

(Hover over image for current price.)

There are two Meccano motorbike kits to choose from to inspire inventive model makers. The 189 pieces in kit 1 are flexible and can be used to build 3 different motorcycles. New bendy memory metal simply curves to the shape you want and then returns to a flat form when it’s removed. For ages 8+.

LEGO MOTORBIKES

LEGO City 7235: Police Motorcycle – £2.92

(Hover over image for current price.)

If your children are into LEGO as well as motorbikes, then this little set combines them both nicely. This policeman is on the fastest motorcycle in town. The set includes the motorcycle, one LEGO figure and the accessories to complete the bike, such as an antenna, radio, and light parts. The bike body itself is only two pieces clipped together so not very taxing but at least your little ones can get on with playing with it. It is a nice addition to any other LEGO City sets you have. For ages 3+.

LEGO Indiana Jones 7620: Indiana Jones Motorcycle Chase – £14.99

(Hover over image for current price.)

This LEGO set includes everything you need to recreate an Indiana Jones motorcycle chase scene. LEGO’s Indy-themed sets are hugely popular with children who love the film and love LEGO. This 79 piece pack comes complete with three mini figures (Indy, Henry Jones Sr and guard), accessories for Indy, a motorbike with detachable sidecar and a gate to crash through that moves up and down for added realism. It’s easy for young children to build and is durable, just like all LEGO. For ages 6+.

LEGO Creator Race Rider Motorbike 6747 – £16.99

This 20cm LEGO motorbike can be built and rebuilt into 3 different models – (1) a sports bike with working suspension and steering, (2) a chopper-style motorcycle or (3) a powerful dragster! It has instructions for all 3 bikes, a working kick stand, front steering and adjustable wings and windshield. For ages 7+.

FILM FIGURES WITH MOTORBIKES

Terminator 4 Motorbike With Figure – £14.99

For all Terminator fans out there, try this 9cm John Connor figure with his 19cm Terminator motorbike. This set has moving parts and cool features such as spring loaded projectiles for battle. For ages 4+.

MOTORBIKE VIDEO GAME

Nitrobike (Wii) – £9.99

(Hover over image for current price.)

Moving away from toys as such, if you’re still stuck for motorbike ideas try this value for money Wii game. It offers fun to any motorbike fan by driving bikes with nitro charged rockets attached to them. Special effects and camera movements reinforce the sensations provided. Its low price reflects its slightly dated feel – the graphics are OK but lack detail and quality. It can still be fun for avid racers.

So I hope that’s given you some idea of the motorbike toys that are available. If your child has any others I’d love to hear your thoughts on them. Please leave me a comment.
